Over the weekend of February 8th & 9th, Picture Farm will be holding it’s first film festival! We have just announced our line up which can be perused HERE.

We have been so excited to be able to give LDBA a temporary home for the last year. The community crafting goodness it’s produced has filled the gallery space with, well, goodness. This weekend we bid farewell L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts with a full weekend of arts and crafts. Dirty your hands with Indigo Dying and plot revenge with Arrow Making. The impromptu collaboration of Pete Simonelli, Lynn Wright, and Simon Goff, also known as Molecules, was born in Madrid, Spain in October 2012. Simonelli was promoting his newly translated book of poetry on tour with Wright and Goff’s band Bee and Flower when he entered the dressing room 10 minutes before his set and summoned them to the stage without prior warning. They are a loose fit in a world of tight jeans, offering a mixture of improvised musical explosions and words with a keen on eye on keeping scores settled and psychic accounts balanced.
This Saturday, Sr. Wright and Mr. Goff will be performing with artist Matthew Lusk and Simonelli. They will also play a piece or two from Wright’s score for choreographer Rachel Cohen’s dance Construct,which premiered at Incubator Arts/St. Mark’s Church in August of 2013.
Lynn Wright and Simon Goff both play in the New York/Berlin-based bands And The Wiremen and Bee and Flower.
Goff also plays bass with British band Hope and Social and is active in the European contemporary dance scene, working extensively with choreographer and dancer Lisanne Goodhue.
Wright composes music for choreographer Rachel Cohen’s dance company Racoco/RX, collaborates with writer Victoria Miguel, most recently on her play Laqueria at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and works in various ever-shifting contexts with composer/laptop performer Chris Becker, Flip Barnes (William Parker Quartet), Paul Watson (Sparklehorse), Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu), and long-time song-writing partner Jon Petrow, among others.
Pete Simonelli is an underground literary veteran and vocalist/frontman for the band Enablers. Lancashire and Somerset have published two books of his poetry as well as a CD of his readings. Both books have been translated into Spanish and published in the fine land of Spain.
This performance is in conjunction with Lusk’s Closed For Alterations show, currently at the PF Gallery.
Matthew Lusk is a true veteran of the olde-time Williamsburg/Greenpoint artsy days when rent was cheap, lofts were unheated and the possibilities of being a working artist were, well, possible. It is a different world out there now it seems, but thinkers like M. Lusk are still plying their craft and making incredible work the old fashioned way, with their brains, experience and talent that only comes from putting the time in.
We are proud to present our first show of the 2014 PF gallery season: Closed for Alterations, Matthew’s series of large-scale collages of tailor’s patterns on board, with mixed media elements and a treatment of acrylic and glaze with a faux-finisher’s graining comb along with an large installation piece that will complement the thought process and offer gallery denizens a bar to which “saddling up” would be the proper verbiage.

“These are all new or recent collages of images and paper tailor’s patterns on oil and acrylic backgrounds. Initially, I was just making compositions and putting gestural painty things and faux-bois finishes underneath the odd regularity of the men’s suit patterns. Then, after awhile, I decided that the compositions could bear the weight of some things I have been working with in my sculptural installations. These appear here mostly in the form of WPA photographs of the Great Depression; images of the poor, the unfortunate, the oppressed, and the environment they inhabited. And as a foil, some images of the forces that dominated over them. Overall, I think they’ve begun to reach a point where the regularity of the patterns and the irregularity of the painterly marks are made are joined in an ambivalent conflation in the same way that images of the dominant and its oppressed are an inseparable whole.” – M. Tell us about the inspiration for your piece.
This piece was made as part of the Cabin Time residency at Wilderness State Park, Michigan. It documents Mirror, a large-scale ice drawing that was completed over the course of 4 days and serves as a meditation on process, surface and site.
What’s been your most interesting shoot thus far & why?
Any shoot that gives me an excuse to build an immense sculpture is exciting.
What are you working on next?
I think my next project will involve ceramics.

Tell us about the inspiration for your piece.
On the time when I took these I was interested in keeping frames minimal and involve as little interruption into the negative space of the frame as i could. These images were taken on the Dragobrat Mountain on the Ukrainian part of the Carpathians – a very desolate place that is an inspiration itself.
What’s been your most interesting shoot thus far & why?
Hard to outline one particular shoot. As portrait photographer I get to meet incredible people all over the world. I’ve been working on a personal project about world war II veterans living around the globe and this series has affected me the most.
What are you working on next?
Finishing up the veterans project. Hopefully early 2014.
